Offenbach dismantled Bayern at the Bundesliga opener in 1974

1. August 1974. First matchday of the Bundesliga – and a result that made football history.

The reigning European Cup winners from Munich arrived with World Cup champions such as Sepp Maier, Franz Beckenbauer, Uli Hoeneß, and Gerd Müller. But on this afternoon, the big stage belonged solely to the Kickers from Offenbach.

Winfried Schäfer opened the scoring, and Dieter Schwemmle increased the lead to 2-0 before halftime. Those expecting a response from Bayern Munich were instead treated to an Offenbach football frenzy.

Erwin Kostedde scored shortly after the restart and later a second time. Sigfried Held completed the rout before Egon Bihn scored the sixth goal shortly before the final whistle.

6:0 against the mighty FC Bayern.

Offenbach played bravely, passionately, and without any respect for their opponent's famous names. A historic triumph that remains one of the greatest moments in the club's history.

Six goals. A sensation. An afternoon for the ages.
